Tiny Getaway to The Hyggelig Hytte

Welcome to the adventure!

The Hyggelig Hytte, a wonderful, tiny cabin located in central VT, just outside Montpellier, was the perfect place for a relaxing couples getaway. We made our first stop, after crossing into Vermont, in the town of Putney, where we found a food co-op and got some genuine New England-style eats for dinner that evening. Some fresh fiddleheads, for later, and some maple candy for the rest of the ride, completed the experience!

We arrived at the Hyggelig Hytte around 6pm, just in time to get some quick photos and check out a bit of the surrounding area. We were pleased to drive in on a dry dirt road, as spring in New England can be a muddy adventure sometimes, so check what the weather’s been like before you head out, or take an appropriate vehicle.

The driveway to the cabin was rather steep but it opened up to a nice, flat area, where the cabin and sauna were tucked away.

We relaxed in the hammock for a while, spent time reading about the local attractions, and unloaded our belongings, before meeting our lovely host, Selene` who gave us some insight into how she came to run the Hyggeling Hytte experience.

She shared with us the unfortunate story of the first cabin that was there, and how it had suffered a fire after only a handful of visitors were able to enjoy it; truly a tiny home owner's worst-case-scenario. The Hyggelig Hytte Cabin (A Scandinavian inspired design) came from the Jamaica Cottage Shop in VT, and was prefabricated off site, for convenience. The cabin’s design is certainly unique, inside and out, and the sauna gives the stay almost a "wilderness spa" feeling. We had a great opportunity to experience the sauna during a cool spring rain, it was spectacular!

The cabin featured a clear awning over the front porch that was also nice to have during a rainstorm, a very peaceful and private way to get in touch with nature.

There were also many amenities, such as, a refrigerator, toaster, hot plate, and coffee maker. One drawback, however, the appliances used a lot of power and as there are no sustainable energy systems currently in place, the ground line from the main house gave consistent and reliable charge. If you book on short notice and don't have a chance to bring in your own food, Selene does provide some staple items in the cabin. The local general store has all the basics, as well.

For those of you wondering, there is an outhouse, only a short walk from the cabin itself, with a composting toilet system, very clean and easy to use. There was no shower in the cabin setup itself, although the sauna is a great way to work up a cleansing sweat, in the morning or evening. And there are few things we find more relaxing than a simple sauna, in the privacy of the forest!

Thank you again, to our wonderful host for making our stay a very pleasant experience, and one that we would certainly wish to have, again. And thank you, to my travel partner, for all her wonderful insight, support, and enthusiasm.
